Heads of States Plant Trees in Jerusalem

Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael-Jewish National Fund recently had the pleasure of hosting distinguished guests, who came to Israel, visited the Grove of the Nations in Jerusalem and planted trees to represent brotherhood.

The Prime Minister of Croatia, Dr. Ivo Sanader, planted an oak tree and received a tree-planting certificate and a Magen David statuette as a gift. KKL-JNF Deputy Chairman Michael Edri noted in his remarks that it is very symbolic that after visiting Yad Vashem, where the Prime Minister learned firsthand about the destruction of the Jewish people, he came to this grove of trees to plant a living tree with roots that will grow in the Land of Israel.

The Croatian Prime Minister’s entourage included his wife Prof. Dr. Mirjana Sanader, the Minister of Education, the Minister of Culture, and the Croatian ambassador to Israel, Mr. Ivan del Veccio. Also participating in the ceremony were children from the fifth grade of the Ramat Sharett School of Jerusalem, who added to the ceremony’s festive and joyful atmosphere.

Not far away, a very moving ceremony took place on the Vantage Points Road in the Shaar Hagai forest, where a grove was planted in memory of the 28 Italian soldiers who fell in the line of duty in Iraq. Attending the ceremony were the Italian Minister of Defense, Professor Antonio Martino, KKL-JNF World Chairman Yehiel Leket, Director General of the Ministry of Defense General Amos Yaron, the president of KKL-JNF Italy Rafael Sassun, senior officers from the Italian army, members of the diplomatic corps and heads of the Jewish community of Italy.

During the ceremony, those present spoke about how symbolic it was to be planting trees in the memory of soldiers who fell defending democracy and preventing terrorism. The Italian guest thanked KKL-JNF for the beautiful and meaningful ceremony and for the project to commemorate the soldiers’ memory in a homeland reborn, where waterworks and trees demonstrate to the entire world that renewal is possible and a harmonious and peaceful life can be attained. At the conclusion of the planting, Mr. Leket gave his guest a tree-planting certificate and a Magen David statuette in the form of a tree. He pointed out that while in Italy an economist had become the Minister of Defense, in Israel military men become the leaders of the economy. In response, Professor Martino asked with a smile, “If so, it would be interesting to know who is creating greater damage?”

The President of Micronesia, Joseph Osomel planted a tree this week in the Grove of the Nations. He was received by KKL-JNF World Chairman Yehiel Leket, who told the President that Israeli citizens had heard of Micronesia's brave support of Israel. The President read the Planter’s Prayer in English and said that he deemed it a great honor to plant an olive tree, which symbolizes peace, in Jerusalem. He expressed his hope that the friendship between Israel and Micronesia will grow and blossom like the trees of the forest. Afterwards, Mr. Leket presented him, too, with the tree-planting certificate and a Magen David statuette in the form of a tree.

In the middle of June, the Foreign Minister of Guatemala, Sr. Jorge Briz Abularach planted an olive tree in Guatemala Forest in Mesilat Zion, near Jerusalem. The ambassadors of Israel and Guatemala said the Planter’s Prayer. KKL-JNF Board member Arye Edelheit greeted the guests in the name of KKL-JNF.

Walkathon France Dedicates the Beit Yoav Reservoir

Towards the end of May, the traditional KKL-JNF France Water Walk took place. A delegation of about 150 people arrived in Israel, and participants walked for eight days in the northern region as a means of fundraising to improve Israel’s water economy. The walk took place in the northern Hula Valley, where most of Israel’s freshwater sources are to be found – the Dan River, Nahal Hermon, and other streams that create the Hatzbani River and converge at the Jordan River.

On one of the days of the water walk, Walkathon participants dedicated the Beit Yoav reservoir, which was built with the generous contribution of friends of KKL-JNF France. The reservoir, with a volume of 1,000,000 cubic meters, is located next to Kiryat Gat in the south of Israel, and stores effluents from Kiryat Gat and its environs. After purification, the water is used to irrigate about 2200 dunams of agricultural fields for the benefit of local kibbutzim. At the ceremony, Avi Dickstein, director of the Division of Resources and Development, presented the president of KKL-JNF France Friedrich Nordemand a certificate of appreciation for the contribution towards building the water reservoir.
